Agustina Macri shares the life of Carla Rodríguez, a trans miner from Argentina, in ‘Miss Carbón’

«There is a great dehumanization,» Rodríguez asserts, lamenting the attacks on «diversity and the different»

Argentinian filmmaker Agustina Macri — daughter of former Argentinian president Mauricio Macri — has depicted the real story of Carla Rodríguez, a trans woman who became the first to work in a mine in the Argentinian Patagonia, in ‘Miss Carbón’. She expresses sorrow that her country is destroying itself «from within.»

«Globally, diversities and differences are being attacked. There is a great dehumanization,» she warned in an interview with Europa Press, ahead of the premiere on Friday, June 13, of ‘Miss Carbón.’

Her story is the central plot of ‘Miss Carbón,’ a film starring Lux Pascal as Rodríguez, with the participation of Spanish actor Paco León.

«My struggle was not against a glass ceiling, it was against inequality and injustice (…). After many years, we managed to have fellow women join the workforce. It was a decision that had to be made. Fortunately, there is nothing stopping women from entering the mining industry,» Rodríguez emphasized.

On her part, Macri believes that ‘Miss Carbón’ will shed «light» and highlight Carla Rodríguez’s achievements. «I recommend that everyone have a ‘Carlita’ in their life,» the director expressed.

«For me, Carla is an example. She has taught me so many things, and above all, she has done it silently. She does everything with love and dedication,» Macri praised.

One of the filmmaker’s goals was to maintain the «realism» of the mine, which was made possible through Rodríguez’s close collaboration, leading her to become a «star producer.» «It was a shoot under very hostile conditions and was very physical. We were almost hit by a storm from Antarctica just a day apart,» Macri noted.

Meanwhile, Paco León was drawn to Rodríguez being a pioneer in the 21st century. «When you hear that she is the first female miner, you might think it’s a story from the 18th century or something. But when you see that it’s so contemporary, it makes you realize the relative nature of progress,» he stated.

«The world is vast, and rural environments are very different. We must not let our guard down because there are mirages that make us believe we are making progress that can be endangered at any moment,» he concluded.
