Amazon’s latest feature aims to simplify diving into the newest installment of a series, especially if there has been a gap since the last time you read the previous books. The new Recaps feature is included in the most recent software update for the Kindle, drawing comparisons to the «Previously on…» segments often found in TV shows. Amazon introduced Recaps through a blog post, stating that users can access it once they have received the software update wirelessly or by downloading and installing it from Amazon’s website. While Amazon did not delve into the specifics of the technology behind the feature in the post, a spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the recaps will be generated using artificial intelligence.
Following the rollout of the feature, users took to social media to speculate if Amazon is utilizing generative AI to compose series summaries. Concerns were raised about the use of generative AI, particularly regarding the potential for the technology to create plot elements that do not actually exist in the books. Amazon spokesperson Ale Iraheta reassured TechCrunch that the recaps created by Amazon are accurate, although users are advised to use them at their own discretion.
Currently, the Recaps feature is accessible for popular English-language book series on all Kindle devices in the United States. To check if your favorite series includes recaps, simply look for the «View Recaps» button within the series page in your Kindle library. The feature will soon be made available for the Kindle app on iOS as well.
