Viktor Antonov, known for his work as the art lead on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has passed away at the age of 52. The news was shared by Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw on Instagram, with other former colleagues also expressing their condolences on social media. Laidlaw mentioned in a now-expired post that Antonov, the visionary art lead on HL2, had passed away.
Antonov began his career in video games by working on Redneck Rampage. In addition to his role as art director for Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, he also provided consultation on titles such as Doom (2016) and Fallout 4. The Bulgarian artist had recently been featured in a documentary commemorating the 20th anniversary of Half-life 2 in November.
«RIP Viktor Antonov. I wish I had expressed to you how much I admired you, but we often get caught up in our lives until unexpected news like this shakes us,» wrote Raphael Colantonio, the founder of Arkane Studios and Wolfeye Studios, on Bluesky. «You played a crucial role in the success of Arkane Studios and served as an inspiration to many of us, as well as a friend with whom I shared many cherished memories.» Game designer Harvey Smith also shared his thoughts, saying, «All the praise for his impact and talent is warranted, but I will always remember how he made me laugh with his dry, cutting humor. RIP.»
