The Government has opened up to extending the deadline for the regularization of migrants until March 2025, as parliamentary sources have assured Europa Press.
The Executive, through the State Secretariat for Migration, has been negotiating for weeks with the congressional groups the requirements that will be included in the royal decree that will develop the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) for the extraordinary regularization of more than half a million foreign individuals, which has been stalled in Congress for over a year.
In the Government’s new proposal, the initial regularization deadline, which was December 2024, is extended until March 2025. However, the same sources indicate that negotiations are currently underway to extend the deadline as much as possible.
In May, the Government presented its proposal to the groups for the regularization of migrants, coinciding with the entry into force of the Foreigners Regulation. In this document, the PSOE acknowledges that «there is a significant number of individuals who will not be able to obtain this authorization despite having been in Spain for a long time.» Specifically, it refers to individuals who have withdrawn their application for international protection or individuals with vulnerabilities.
NGOs have been warning since November 2024 of the «negative impact» that the new Foreigners Regulation has on asylum seekers.
The PSOE will need to gather support for the proposal to move forward. All congressional parties except Vox approved the consideration of the regularization ILP last year.
From the PP, the party’s spokesperson, Miguel Tellado, warned that the ‘popular’ party does not give «blank checks» to the Government and stated that this is a matter that must be debated in the lower house.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, indicated on Tuesday at a press conference in Congress that the Regularization Ya platform, promoter of the ILP, «is the one who ultimately has to say whether the conditions that the Socialist Party is setting are acceptable or not.» She also urged the PSOE to approve an extraordinary regularization by royal decree if they have changed their minds.
The ‘Regularization Ya’ movement agrees that the regularization process should be expedited as they have been waiting for «over a year.» They also request that all immigrants who arrived in Spain by May 20, 2025, be regularized.
