After removing a hernia, the main risk is that it may reappear or that the disc in the spine may deteriorate, but this system blocks the fibrous ring of the intervertebral disc without interfering with the natural movements of the spine, as reported by the Bellvitge Hospital this Friday in a statement.
The study has monitored this system for 6 months in 30 patients at high risk of hernia recurrence, and all of them preserved at least 75% of the initial disc height, with none showing degeneration of the intervertebral disc.
The other healthcare centers involved are the Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital (Madrid), the QuirónSalud Barcelona Hospital, the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (Barcelona), the Fundación Jiménez Díaz University Hospital (Madrid), and the University Hospital of the Canary Islands.
The specialist in spine surgery from the Neurosurgery Service of Bellvitge University Hospital and lead author of the study, Dr. Óscar Godino, has expressed the need to continue conducting more studies and introducing improvements, but there is «no doubt» that it is an important advancement.
