Perplexity introduced a new tool called Deep Research on Friday, offering in-depth research and analysis to deliver detailed reports in response to user questions. The tool is available for free, with limited use, and is accessible on the web initially, with plans to expand to iOS, Android, and Mac apps.
According to a tweet from the company, Deep Research is capable of generating expert-level research reports on a variety of topics such as finance, marketing, and product research. It takes approximately 2-4 minutes to provide an answer, during which it conducts numerous searches, reads hundreds of sources, and analyzes the information. Once the research is complete, reports can be shared or exported as PDF files. Perplexity claims that Deep Research outperforms competitors like OpenAI’s o3-mini and o1, as well as DeepSeek-R1, achieving a 21.1 percent accuracy score on the Humanity’s Last Exam benchmark (although slightly lower than OpenAI’s Deep Research score).
Free users are limited to five queries per day, while Pro subscribers have access to 500 queries daily. The company’s announcement was made on Twitter on February 14, 2025.
