There is a lot of excitement surrounding FBC: Firebreak, Remedy’s innovative cooperative online first-person shooter. After attending a demonstration led by the developers, I have been trying to pinpoint the specific element that makes this game stand out. It seems that it’s a combination of various cool features seamlessly blended together. FBC: Firebreak is set in the Federal Bureau of Control’s headquarters, known for its dark surrealism, but it also incorporates a touch of silliness and mechanical complexity. The overall experience is reminiscent of a modern version of Left 4 Dead, with a twist – replacing zombies with Hiss and featuring three players instead of four.
FBC: Firebreak is set six years after the events of Control, where the Oldest House, once the FBC’s seat of power, has been sealed with the Hiss inside. Now, it’s up to the Firebreak team, a group of government volunteers with minimal combat training, to eradicate the invasion and lift the lockdown. As a member of Firebreak, you are equipped with special gear and sent into the headquarters to face the Hiss-infested environment.
The game is structured around Jobs, which are custom missions set in different regions of The Oldest House. Each Job consists of three zones with unique objectives, crises, and environments. Players can customize their runs by adjusting the Threat Level and Clearance Level, which impact combat difficulty and rewards.
Before each match, players can choose from three Crisis Kits, each tailored to specific playstyles. These kits come with tools and items designed to enhance gameplay. Additionally, members of the Firebreak squad have Research Perks, upgrade slots that can be purchased with currency earned during Jobs. Equipping multiple perks of the same type can enhance their effects and even extend them to nearby teammates.
While defeating the Hiss is a primary goal, collecting currency is also crucial in FBC: Firebreak. Currency can be used to purchase new gear, cosmetics, and perks. Players are rewarded with XP and proficiencies regardless of whether they escape a Job alive. However, currency can only be earned by finding it in the environment and successfully escaping with it.
Remedy has promised not to charge for critical post-launch content, ensuring that all playable content, such as Jobs, will be free for all players. The game will offer paid cosmetic content to support ongoing development.
The game features various missions, such as Paper Chase, where players must face off against sticky-note monsters in a classic FBC office setting. With a range of weapons and environmental factors to contend with, each mission promises a unique and exciting experience.
FBC: Firebreak is set to release this summer on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It will also be available on Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, with support for cross-play. The game will feature full ray-tracing support, DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex capabilities, ensuring a smooth and immersive gaming experience.
