«Todo lo que hago es por mis hijos» – Mirabelle, una migrante de Camerún en Valencia

Mirabelle, a 29-year-old woman, arrived in Valencia from Cameroon aboard the ‘Aquarius’, the ship that disembarked on June 17, 2018, in the Port of Valencia with the 629 migrants it carried on board, rescued off the coast of Libya and adrift in the Mediterranean for weeks due to the refusal of countries like Malta and Italy to offer them a safe harbor. In honor of March 8, International Women’s Day, Mirabelle shares with Europa Press her experiences living in Spain.

Mirabelle’s journey to Spain began on the ‘Aquarius’, a rescue ship that became a symbol of the plight of migrants in the Mediterranean. She, along with hundreds of others, faced uncertainty and danger while seeking refuge. The refusal of some countries to provide a safe port highlighted the challenges faced by migrants seeking a better life.

Upon arriving in Valencia, Mirabelle’s journey was far from over. Adapting to a new country, culture, and language presented its own set of challenges. However, she persevered and found a sense of community and support among fellow migrants and local organizations.

As a woman, Mirabelle faced additional obstacles and discrimination. However, she found strength in solidarity with other migrant women and support from local women’s rights organizations. March 8, International Women’s Day, holds special significance for her as she reflects on her experiences as a woman in Spain.

Throughout her time in Spain, Mirabelle has worked hard to build a new life for herself. She has learned new skills, found employment, and formed friendships that have helped her navigate the challenges of starting over in a new country. Despite the difficulties she has faced, Mirabelle remains resilient and hopeful for the future.

As she shares her story with Europa Press, Mirabelle’s message is one of resilience, courage, and determination. She hopes that by speaking out, she can raise awareness about the struggles faced by migrants and inspire others to stand in solidarity with those seeking a better life.

March 8 is not just a day to celebrate women, but a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and justice for all. Mirabelle’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of migrant women, who continue to overcome obstacles and build a better future for themselves and their families.

Through her experiences in Spain, Mirabelle has learned the importance of community, support, and empowerment. She has found her voice and is determined to make a difference, not only for herself but for all those who are struggling to find their place in a new land.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us honor the courage and resilience of women like Mirabelle, who have faced adversity with grace and determination. May their stories inspire us to stand in solidarity with all those who are fighting for a better, more just world.
