The Ministry of Equality has been recording cases of gender-based violence committed by men over 84 years old since 2003, totaling 23 cases over the past 22 years. The most recent confirmed case occurred in Laviana (Asturias), where the perpetrator was 90 years old.
In this latest case, the alleged perpetrator has been arrested by the Asturias Civil Guard for the violent death of his 86-year-old wife in Laviana. According to the Ministry of Equality, there were no previous reports of domestic violence.
According to statistics from the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, consulted by Europa Press, there has been one case of gender-based violence committed by a man over 84 years old so far in 2025. In previous years, the highest number of cases were recorded in 2018 and 2006, with three murders each, and in 2023, 2019, and 2017, with two cases each.
Additionally, in the years 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2020, and 2024, one case was reported each year involving a perpetrator over 84 years old. The exact age of the aggressor is not specified on the portal.
Out of the 23 perpetrators over 84 years old, 22 were Spanish nationals and one was a foreign national. Eight of them committed suicide, six attempted suicide, and in nine cases, there was no suicide attempt. In all cases, the perpetrator was the spouse of the victim, and in all but one case, they were living together at the time of the incident. One case had a previous report against the perpetrator, in 20 cases there was no prior report, and in two cases, it is not specified.
These 23 aggressors over 84 years old account for 1.75% of the total of 1,316 male aggressors identified since 2003.
Contrastingly, the statistical portal also documents 10 female victims over 84 years old in the past 22 years. The years with the highest number of victims in this age group were 2014 and 2019, with two victims each.
