Despelote is set to launch on May 1 for Switch, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Developed by Julián Cordero and Sebastián Valbuena, and published by Panic, Despelote is a visually stunning soccer game that delves into life in Quito, Ecuador in 2001.
In the game, players take on the role of 8-year-old Julián, navigating through the city, interacting with people, and experiencing life amidst Ecuador’s economic recovery leading up to the 2002 World Cup. The game features real photographs of locations in Quito, with a unique visual style that combines gritty backgrounds with detailed line drawings of characters and the soccer ball. The audio in the game is also recorded on location, enhancing the immersive experience.
Originally announced in 2023 with a 2024 release date, Despelote has now been confirmed for release on May 1. The game has already garnered attention, receiving four nominations at the 2025 Independent Games Festival. For those interested, a demo is available on Steam.
