Podemos and Izquierda Unida have celebrated this Monday the mobilization capacity of feminism on March 8, International Women’s Day, against those who «want to put it in a drawer».
«We continue to build that feminism, despite those who want to put it in a drawer, despite those who want to try to limit it, it is an unstoppable force,» Podemos spokesperson Isa Serra said at a press conference.
Serra has highlighted this in reference to the reactionary wave. «Many feminist people took to the streets to say that the only way to confront fascism, anti-feminist reactionaries, and the far-right is precisely with more feminism, more rights, and everyone coming out together to defend a better society,» she pointed out.
In this sense, she said that this March 8 was «fundamental» to vindicate anti-racist feminism, which she added is «increasingly urgent,» given the international context. «I believe that in the international context we are living in, it is evident that anti-racist feminism, anti-colonial feminism, peace feminism against that bellicism, against that regime of war, against that violation of human rights defended by European elites and that we are seeing advancing internationally is increasingly urgent,» she explained.
Likewise, she highlighted the «enormous mobilization capacity» of feminism, which can build a «better» society for «all of humanity.» However, she noted that there is «a lot of work ahead» to ensure the right to sexual freedom, as well as to move towards a world where the right to care is fully guaranteed with public services and where violence and murders of women simply for being women come to an end. «And, of course, also against this reactionary wave where we ensure sexual and reproductive rights and the right to abortion for women,» she concluded.
IU: «SPAIN IS NOT WILLING TO STEP BACK ON EQUALITY RIGHTS»
On his part, the federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Antonio Maíllo, also emphasized this Monday at a press conference the «strength» of the feminist movement despite the rain and the «attacks» from the right and the far-right. «This need to strengthen the feminist movement makes this country continue to be a country that is not willing, expressed through the mobilizations of this weekend, to step back a single millimeter on equality rights,» he emphasized.
Furthermore, Maíllo addressed the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and Vox’s Santiago Abascal, for them to «take note» that «feminism is more alive than ever and certainly not willing to step back on rights.» «And I believe that this reflection is important because, undoubtedly, the success of the calls and the success of massive participation is a sign that feminism in our country is in good health and that is something that challenges us and is good news for everyone,» he stated.
