The industrial Dow Jones index closed with a 2 percent loss, the S&P index fell by 2.7 percent, and the Nasdaq technology index lost 4 percent in trading in a session of sharp declines attributed to recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he did not rule out the possibility of an economic recession.
In total, the three indices have accumulated more than a trillion dollars (euros) in losses, according to Bloomberg’s calculations, with companies like Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, experiencing drops of up to 15 percent. Airlines United Airlines and Delta both fell by more than 4 percent each.
This selling frenzy on Wall Street also coincides with Trump’s announcement of tariffs, which will prompt a response from powers such as China, Canada, or Mexico, leading to a decline in U.S. exports.
This Monday, China began imposing tariffs on imports of U.S. chicken, wheat, and soybeans, while Canada announced price increases for electricity sold to bordering U.S. states.
Last week also saw drops in U.S. stock indices, such as the S&P 500, which had its worst week since September of last year.
Experts attribute these declines to an interview with Donald Trump aired over the weekend on Fox News, where he mentioned a «transition period» with tariffs.
When asked about the possibility of a recession, Trump responded, «I hate making predictions about things like that.» «It takes time, but I think it will be great for us,» he added in the interview recorded on Thursday. On Sunday, he was asked again if he ruled out a recession. «Who knows?» he said.
Since Trump’s inauguration, the Dow Jones has fallen by 2.5 percent, the S&P 500 by 5 percent, and the Nasdaq by 10 percent, driven by poor U.S. economic data such as employment, business confidence, or mortgage rates, which are at seven-week lows.
