The works began in October and are expected to finish by summer.
Phases 1 and 2 of the sustainable corridor of Pío XII, which cover the stretch between Avenida de Navarra and Avenida de Sancho el Fuerte in Pamplona, are already completed, pending the final landscaping works.
According to the City Council, last week, the paving works were carried out in this stretch, creating new green areas in the eliminated parking spaces and other sidewalk spaces, such as at the intersection with Calle Iturrama, as well as new advanced bus stops and improvements in the bike lane.
The City Council’s Management and Urban Planning Commission, along with Mayor Joseba Asiron, visited Avenida de Pío XII on Wednesday to inspect the works carried out in recent months.
The expansion of the sustainable corridor of Pío XII is divided into six phases, with a duration of seven months. It started last October and is expected to be completed by summer if the forecasts are met.
The budget for the works amounts to 1.8 million euros, of which the Government of Navarra contributes 450,000 euros through an agreement. Excavaciones Fermín Osés SL is responsible for the works as the awardee of the sixth contract derived from the framework agreement for mobility and sustainability improvements.
Currently, the ongoing works correspond to phase 3, affecting the stretch of Pío XII between Sancho el Fuerte and Vuelta del Castillo.
The main action involves the modification of the intersection with Monasterio de Urdax, where the vehicle stop line is moved back, and the creation of a green area in the parking spaces between portals 3 and 5.
Work is also being done on the service line redistribution and the bike lane. It is expected that the paving of this stretch will be completed before Easter.
DESIGN OF AVENIDA DE PÍO XII
The new design of Avenida de Pío XII expands the landscaped areas by 2,446 square meters. As work progresses in different phases, parking spaces are being eliminated and converted into green areas with sustainable urban drainage.
Several landscaped green areas have been created at the intersection with Avenida de Navarra, before and after the junction with Pedro I, between portals 41 and 39, and between 31 and 29.
Two new green areas have been created on the sidewalk at the intersection with Calle Iturrama. This is a way to "re-naturalize underutilized spaces, barely used by pedestrian traffic in usual routes but with great potential to host nature, and to bet on areas with sustainable urban drainage that provide a more pleasant image of the environment".
The new sustainable corridor of Pío XII is configured, following the Green and Blue Infrastructure Plan of the Pamplona City Council, as an urban green corridor that seeks to "promote and prioritize pedestrian and cyclist mobility through semi-natural urban environments and landscapes that allow the connection" of the rest of the Green Infrastructure pieces, creating green routes between the Citadel and the University of Navarra and promoting the Camino de Santiago.
Also on Calle Iturrama, where both directions have been paved to the roundabout with Calle Fuente del Hierro, the intervention has been used to create two advanced bus stops for the city buses to "guarantee greater safety for users and calm traffic".
The planned works on the sustainable corridor of Pío XII also reorganize the multifunctional service band. Loading and unloading areas will be modified, reduced to three, and a new square reserved for vehicles with reduced mobility cards will be created, reaching six on Avenida de Pío XII.
Furthermore, improvements are being made to the bike lane and bike racks to "promote the use of bicycles and create safer routes".
