Playdate, the little yellow gaming machine with a crank, is set to receive a price increase in the coming days. Panic, the developer, announced in a newsletter that starting on March 25, the Playdate will be priced at $229, up from the current price of $199. The reason for the price hike is attributed to Panic’s move to a new factory, where manufacturing costs are significantly higher compared to their previous facility. It is worth noting that Panic had previously raised the price of the handheld device from $179 to $199 last year due to similar manufacturing cost issues.
In addition to the price increase, Panic will also be offering «an (extremely) limited stock» of Playdate systems that are either fully refurbished at their factory or have minor cosmetic issues. The refurbished units will be priced at $179 and come with a six-month warranty, ensuring that they work perfectly and can play games without any issues. Panic hopes that this offering will make the Playdate more accessible to those who may have been deterred by the price increase.
The Playdate handheld gaming console was released in 2022 and features a black-and-white screen with over 150 games available for download from its Catalog. Alongside the traditional arrow and gaming buttons, the Playdate also includes a unique crank that developers can incorporate into their games. For example, in the game Chopter Copter, players must turn the Playdate on its side to use the crank as a helicopter-style rotor.
For existing Playdate owners, Panic is currently hosting a Catalog Anniversary Sale until March 20, allowing users to expand their game library for the handheld device. Additionally, Panic has confirmed that they are collaborating with developers to create a Season 2 bundle, which will deliver a curated collection of games to buyers’ devices over a specific period.
