The Government has indicated that a «thorough and detailed investigation» is underway following the murder of the 35-year-old social worker in a supervised apartment in Badajoz last March.
«Therefore, as part of this inspection, a thorough and detailed investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding this work accident, analyzing the working conditions in which the injured worker was providing services, as well as any other work conditions or related circumstances that may be linked to the work accident, verifying compliance with Social Order regulations,» the Government stated.
This is evident in a written parliamentary response, reported by Europa Press, to a series of questions from Sumar regarding the «lack of security measures» that supervised apartments may have following the worker’s murder.
«The death of Belén Cortés, 35, in an apartment in Badajoz while caring for a group of minors under different judicial resolutions has brought to light the lack of security measures these residences may have and the precarious labor conditions faced by individuals in these positions, managed by subcontracted companies under the responsibility of regional governments,» Sumar denounced.
Sumar also explains that although these centers are under the jurisdiction of autonomous communities, they are managed by private companies with tenders usually awarded every four years, «with lack of control, little rigor in their hiring practices, and poor working conditions for their employees, impacting the reintegration opportunities for minors.»
The «unfortunate incident» occurred on March 9 in a supervised residence in the Extremadura town of Badajoz. According to the Government, this incident should be classified as a «work accident» according to the definition provided by Article 156 of the Consolidated Text of the General Social Security Law of October 30, 2015 (BOE of the 31st), which approves the General Law of Social Security.
In this regard, it adds that the murder of the educator is being investigated by the Provincial Inspection of Labor and Social Security of the province of Badajoz. Furthermore, it notes that once the investigation is concluded and the mandatory report is submitted to the Labor Authority, appropriate measures will be taken, if necessary, by the Labor and Social Security Inspection, within their jurisdiction, based on the inspection’s findings.
Additionally, it emphasizes that the Labor and Social Security Inspection carries out a «constant monitoring and enforcement» of compliance with regulations on safety and health at work.
