Precisely to sponsor its launch, the channel enlisted Vonda Shepard, a singer who rose to stardom worldwide thanks to the series starring Calista Flockhart with her song ‘Searchin’ for My Soul’. In an interview with Europa Press, the artist acknowledges that in this era of streaming and binge-watching, some of the magic of the 80s and 90s has been lost when millions of people would tune in at the same time to watch iconic series, creating a shared experience through their televisions.
«Nowadays, it’s very different, we can all watch whatever we want whenever we want, but it’s a bit more isolating,» reflects Sheppard, emphasizing that in the past, with everyone doing the same thing at the same time, successful series created a sense of community. A connection «on a strange spiritual level» that sparked conversations for months, even years, and a deeper attachment of the audience to the characters.
Nevertheless, despite the powerful force of nostalgia, Sheppard also appreciates the current era. «Personally, I don’t mind, I like being able to watch what I want and we are all used to this now, to everything happening very quickly. But there was something very special in those old times,» acknowledges the singer and songwriter, who believes a series like Ally McBeal would still have the same impact if it were to premiere now, in the era of streaming and fast consumption.
«Yes, I think it would have had the same impact and it would be an equally powerful series… and people would even watch more and immerse themselves more in the world of ‘Ally McBeal’,» assures the singer, who portrayed herself in over a hundred episodes of the renowned lawyer series playing the piano at the Martini Bar where Ally, Richard, Elaine, Nelle, and company would gather to have fun and share their sorrows.
To recapture some of that shared magic of the past, VinTV arrives with a thematic prime time that, every night starting at 9:30 pm, offers a reunion with the most iconic characters of the small screen, with Thursdays reserved for episodes of ‘Ally McBeal’. Mondays are dedicated to ‘Northern Exposure’, the series starring Rob Morrow that turned a small frozen town into a beloved place for the audience. Starting on Tuesday, July 15, it will be the turn of ‘Twin Peaks’, the cult phenomenon created by David Lynch that captivated viewers with the mysterious murder of Laura Palmer.
On Wednesdays, ‘Knight Rider’ will bring back the most charismatic protagonist of the 80s – David Hasselhoff – and his inseparable car KITT, ahead of its time. Following the Thursdays of ‘Ally McBeal’, on Fridays, the most iconic detective from Hawaii, ‘Magnum’, arrives with his printed shirts and the mustache of the legendary Tom Selleck. Saturdays see the stylish agents embodied by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas back in action in ‘Miami Vice’ with their criminal plots and unmistakable 80s aesthetics. And on Sundays, suspense takes over the end of the week with ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’, the anthology series that turned fear into art.
In addition to their prime time star series, VinTV also offers a daily emotional journey through iconic TV spaces. Each morning from Monday to Friday, the voice of Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente will resonate with ‘The Man and the Earth’, a documentary series that left a mark on generations and first awakened ecological consciousness in many homes.
In the afternoon, it’s time for ‘The Golden Girls’, a sitcom that, since its premiere in 1985, broke taboos and became one of the most influential comedies in television history. Its characters humorously and bravely tackled topics like aging or sexual diversity.
As night falls, just like in the 90s, the ball rolls back onto the field with ‘Captain Tsubasa’, the anime that turned soccer into epic. Its endless fields, impossible goals, and eternal friendships captivated multiple generations and now have their place in the daily schedule.
In addition to the announced titles, VinTV will soon feature two of the most anticipated series in its lineup: ‘The X-Files’, landing with Mulder and Scully after summer, and ‘V’, the unforgettable 80s dystopia about an invasion of hungry alien creatures with the appearance of giant lizards.
