Saiz meets with the Minister of Equality to address the situation of migrant women victims of gender-based violence
The Council of Ministers will approve a new state of emergency in the Canary Islands on Tuesday, July 22, with 40 million euros for the creation of 1,200 asylum places for migrant minors on the Peninsula.
This was indicated by the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migrations, Elma Saiz, in an interview on TVE, reported by Europa Press, and later confirmed in statements to the media after the Gender Gap Advisory Council meeting.
«We are scrupulously complying with the Supreme Court ruling. Tomorrow there will be a new state of emergency with 40 million euros, with 1,200 places on the Peninsula, with weekly meetings with the Canarian Government. Another meeting will be held tomorrow to ensure that this collaboration between administrations provides a response,» she told TVE.
In this sense, the Minister of Inclusion emphasized that they are «minors» and cannot be transferred unless it is done in an «absolutely scrupulous» manner and «with maximum supervision and delicacy.»
Saiz also referred to the ‘standoff’ of the autonomous communities of the Popular Party, except Ceuta, which last week prevented the holding of the Childhood sectorial conference, convened by the Ministry of Youth and Childhood to address the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors.
«The Popular Party is using minors as scapegoats, these vulnerable children to try to undermine the Government because they do not have a country model. And, therefore, what they do with any important issue like this, which is responding to unaccompanied minors, is to rise up, rebel,» she stated.
Subsequently, in statements to the media after the Gender Gap Advisory Council meeting, held at the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migrations, Saiz stated that the Government’s objective has been «from the beginning to scrupulously comply with the Supreme Court ruling.»
She reiterated this when asked about the fact that the Canarian Government has notified the Supreme Court of the «lack» of collaboration from the Spanish Government to comply with the court orders to protect the over 1,000 minors who have applied for asylum.
The Minister of Inclusion recalled that they will have a new meeting with the Canarian government on Tuesday, as part of the weekly meetings they have been holding, and emphasized that they are «talking about minors.»
«They are minors first before they are migrants, and when it comes to their transfer, we must be careful and ensure meticulous legal protection and guarantees,» Saiz emphasized.
Furthermore, following the «significant amendment to Article 35,» she described as «absolutely inexplicable the attitude of the PP, which rises up, almost in defiance of the law itself.»
In this regard, Saiz pointed out that in the case of the over 7,000 minors from Ukraine, «all the Autonomous Communities have done their best,» and criticized that «now, faced with minors from North Africa, they have a very different attitude,» so she asked the PP if it is because of «skin color» and appealed to «responsibility.»
MIGRANT VICTIMS OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
After the Gender Gap Advisory Council meeting, Saiz will have a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, to analyze the situation of migrant women victims of gender-based violence, especially those in irregular situations.
«There is a double vulnerability in the case of migrant women, adding to that ‘m’ of migrants, that ‘m’ of women,» Saiz emphasized.
For her part, Redondo recalled that in February of this year, the State Pact against Gender-Based Violence was renewed and that it is time for each ministry to «take on the measures it needs to develop to combat gender-based violence.»
According to Redondo, referring to the latest crisis committee on the recent cases of fatal gender-based violence, «in 60% of cases, the women victims of these murders were migrants.»
«When we have that intersectionality, double and triple discriminations of women with economic vulnerability, resulting from migration situations, sometimes irregular, vulnerability multiplies,» the Minister of Equality pointed out, while calling for specific measures.
