The content has been analyzed by Isabel León, the Deputy Minister of Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, on Monday. The data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) for the first quarter of 2025 indicates that the Canary Islands have reached the highest employment rate in its historical series, with a total of 1,024,100 workers.
Over the course of a year, employment in the islands has increased by 27,900 people, representing a growth of 2.80%. This figure surpasses the national average of 2.43%. Additionally, the number of employed individuals has risen compared to the previous quarter, adding 400 workers (+0.04%) and raising the employment rate to 51.95%. Consequently, the Canary Islands are among the five regions in Spain that have managed to create job positions in the first quarter of 2025. The leading sectors in this growth were Industry with 1,600 new jobs, Construction with 700, and Agriculture with 400.
On the subject of unemployment, there has been a 15.78% increase in the Canary Islands compared to the previous quarter, reaching 160,200 unemployed individuals. This rise, as stated by the Deputy Minister, is consistent with the rest of the country and is mainly due to seasonal patterns. Furthermore, when looking at the annual comparison, which provides a more comprehensive overview of the labor market evolution in the islands, unemployment has decreased by 14,000 people, equivalent to an 8.02% drop. This improvement also exceeds the national average of -6.34%. Consequently, the unemployment rate has decreased from 14.88% in the first quarter of 2024 to the current 13.53%.
It is worth mentioning that these figures coincide with a historical record of active population in the Canary Islands, totaling 1,184,300 individuals. Between January and March, the islands experienced the highest increase in working-age citizens at 1.91%, followed by Madrid with 1.01%. As a result, the activity rate has increased by 1.03%, reaching 60.07%, as highlighted by the Government in a statement.
