Rego es optimista ante la sectorial sobre menores migrantes, pero recuerda a Madrid y Aragón que deben cumplir la ley

The Minister of Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, has expressed «optimism» ahead of the meeting of the sectorial conference on childhood that will address the distribution of migrant minors this afternoon, and has reminded the communities of Madrid and Aragon, which have opposed the call, of the obligation to comply with the law.

«This is a law that must be complied with, we have a critical situation in the Canary Islands that has to do with children’s rights and we have worked decisively to resolve it,» Rego responded firmly in an interview on RNE collected by Europa Press.

For the Minister of Childhood, the attitude of some communities is «very surprising». «We have provided the opportunity, calls, workspaces that have not been able to develop because there has been no willingness from the PP to sit down and work, and we cannot continue to look the other way while 5,000 children are between the Canary Islands and Ceuta,» she argued.

Regarding the figures provided by the autonomous communities on the number of migrant minors hosted, Rego has acknowledged that «precise data is missing» and has specifically referred to Aragon, which has not provided them, but also to Valencia, Extremadura, and Madrid, which have given a «global figure.»

She has also justified the convening of the Sectorial Conference, which has been challenged by Aragon, while the Community of Madrid has requested its suspension.

«We are at the moment when we are implementing the mechanisms of the Royal Decree, and one of them contemplates the holding of this conference to transfer these mechanisms, collect proposals from the autonomous communities, and start making much more formal requests,» the minister defended. Rego also insisted that the Government will be «in a position to start transferring minors to other autonomous communities in the summer.»

In response to criticism from PP governments regarding the distribution proposal, Rego reminded them that «there are autonomous communities whose places are above average,» referring to the Basque Country, Catalonia, or Navarrra. «These are communities that have already been generating their places, so it’s not about how many are going now, it’s about how many children each one will have in care when the process is over,» she argued.
