Sumar’s spokesperson, Lara Hernández, hopes that the extension of paternity and maternity leaves from 16 to 20 weeks will go to the Council of Ministers before the end of July. «We have initiated all governmental channels for this measure to become a reality and be presented to the Council of Ministers before the end of July,» she stated in a press conference.

The Second Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, announced last week that she and the Minister of Social Rights, Consumption, and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, will bring to the Council of Ministers this Tuesday the extension of leaves and the payment of four out of the eight weeks of the childcare leave until the child turns eight years old.

«We are going to extend the birth leave to 20 weeks. We are going to comply with the directive that requires payment for at least four weeks. We are going to tell Spanish single-parent families that they are entitled to 34 weeks, as Spanish courts have already stated. Next week, Mr. President, we will present this to the Council of Ministers. We expect the commitment of the Socialist Party’s votes to move it forward,» Díaz said during her intervention in the extraordinary session to report on alleged cases of corruption in the PSOE.
