Accem attended a total of 26,835 women in vulnerable situations throughout 2024, most of them being Ukrainians and Spaniards, as stated by the NGO on the International Women’s Day, celebrated on Saturday, March 8. Specifically, they have provided support to women in need of international or temporary protection, migrants, homeless women, elderly individuals, those deprived of liberty, victims of violence, or trafficking.
The main nationalities of the women assisted in 2024 were Ukrainian, with 6,203 women, and Spanish, with 4,310. There was also a significant presence of women from Colombia and Venezuela, with 4,045 and 4,024 women assisted, respectively.
In terms of age, the largest group consisted of women between 18 and 34 years old, representing 31.1%, followed by the age group of 35 to 49 years, at 27.4%. They also supported 17.8% of girls and young women under 18 years old, 11.2% of women aged 50 to 64 years, and finally, 12.6% of women over 65 years old.
Regarding the vulnerability situations of the women seeking support from Accem, 3,603 are minors, 3,151 are adults, 2,693 are women from single-parent families with minor children, 1,697 are homeless, 814 are victims of gender-based violence, 427 have disabilities, 366 are LGBTQ+, 341 are pregnant, and 80 are victims of human trafficking.
This year, the NGO has aligned itself with the United Nations’ theme, ‘For women and girls in all their diversity: Rights, equality, and empowerment’, advocating for diversity, equality, and inclusion policies as a necessity and an opportunity to build environments where all individuals, regardless of gender, origin, or identity, have a voice and visibility.
In this regard, it is noted that, according to UNHCR, women and girls represent around 50% of the world’s refugee, internally displaced, or stateless population. Accem has also highlighted the forms of violence and persecution that lead women to leave their homes, such as forced marriages, genital mutilation, physical and sexual violence, use as weapons in conflicts, exploitation in trafficking networks, or discrimination and serious violations of their rights. These are situations that are often exacerbated when it comes to girls and young women.
In the same vein, the Accem program ‘Diversity in the Company’ commemorates the culturally diverse women’s month throughout March. With the goal of advocating for diversity and raising awareness among companies and entities, the NGO provides tools through this program to help create culturally diverse women role models, promote their talent, and build more inclusive work environments.
Furthermore, the organization has launched a solidarity pen for refugee women. «This is not just any pen; with a pen like this, thousands of refugee women and girls have been able to start a new chapter in their lives. Thanks to it, they can continue writing their story. Activities and events are also being held in different Spanish cities to raise awareness among the population,» as explained.
