The English footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool FC when his current contract expires on June 30, as confirmed by the Premier League champions on Monday, increasing the chances of the right-back joining Real Madrid.
«Trent Alexander-Arnold has informed Liverpool FC of his intention to leave the club this summer when his current contract expires. The 26-year-old player will end his two-decade relationship with the ‘Reds’ after deciding to leave Anfield once his contract ends on June 30, 2025,» the English team stated on their website.
The international player emphasized that this was not an easy decision and was the result of much reflection and sentiment. «I’ve been here for 20 years, enjoyed every minute, fulfilled all my dreams, achieved everything I ever wanted. After 20 years giving my all day after day, I’ve reached a point where I feel I need a new change, a new challenge as a player and as a person. And I believe now is the right time to do it,» he added.
He expressed «enormous gratitude» to the fans. «They have been with me from the beginning, supported me, and have been there. I have felt the support, the love, everything they have done has never gone unnoticed, and I have enjoyed every minute. I hope they have felt the same and that I have given everything I could for the club,» he emphasized.
«I just hope we can continue winning games; the commotion (surrounding my decision) does not diminish the value of what we have achieved this season, which has been incredible. It has been amazing to be part of it, and I just hope everyone can not give too much importance to this news and celebrate what others have done,» he concluded.
However, he fully understands the disappointment that his decision may cause among the fans. «I have been a fan of this club all my life; it has given me the opportunity to do everything I have done and to achieve everything. Growing up, seeing players I loved leaving and who helped the team win trophies, you feel a connection with them, especially when they also bring success to the club,» the defender confessed.
«I fully understand that the news will disappoint, upset, and bother many people. Obviously, that also influenced the decision because it is something you don’t want to do, you don’t want to go through moments where you feel like you are disappointing a lot of people, but I had to make a decision, as simple as that. It’s a difficult situation, something that has been on my mind for a long time, but being able to vent now will be like a weight off my shoulders. And I believe it is important for the fans to know what my position is and what the truth is,» he concluded.
Alexander-Arnold joined the Academy of the six-time European champions at just six years old and rose through the youth ranks before making his debut with the first team in 2016. Since then, he has played a total of 352 matches, scoring 23 goals and winning eight titles, including the Champions League in 2019 and two Premier League titles (2020 and 2025).
«Alexander-Arnold leaves with our gratitude and appreciation for his contribution during a period of sustained success,» thanked the English club, which was unable to convince the player to stay longer as they had done with other players whose contracts were ending this season, such as Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah. Now, according to reports, all signs point to his next destination being Real Madrid, in need of a right-back for some time, especially after Dani Carvajal’s serious injury.
