Blizzard has unveiled the details of how hero bans will operate in the competitive realm of Overwatch 2. This new feature will allow teams to ban heroes that they believe are too powerful or simply irritating to face off against, all without the ability to strategize based on their opponents’ preferences. Hero bans are a common aspect of competitive games like League of Legends and add an additional layer of strategy to the gameplay.
In Overwatch 2, the «Ban Phase» is intended to give players the opportunity to eliminate heroes that they find frustrating while also providing valuable data for future game rebalancing. At the start of a competitive match, players will have the option to select their «Preferred Hero,» indicating to their team which hero they do not wish to see banned. They will then rank three heroes that they want to remove from the match, with their top choice carrying the most weight and their last choice the least. Blizzard has specified that all teams and players will vote simultaneously, with communication between opposing teams blocked until the voting process concludes.
Once all the votes are cast, they will be tallied according to the following rules:
– The team with the most votes for a specific hero will be designated as the «first» team and will have their chosen hero banned. In the event of a tie, the first team will be randomly determined.
– The other team will then become the «second» team. If the heroes they voted to ban differ from the first team’s banned hero, their top two voted heroes will be banned.
– If the second team’s top two choices align with the first team’s, the second team’s third most voted hero will be banned instead.
– Finally, the second most voted hero from the first team will be banned, following the same criteria as the second team.
In the event of a tie in votes for a hero, the game will select the hero chosen by the highest number of players in the lobby (not based on total votes). Any further ties will be resolved randomly, and regardless of the outcome, each role is limited to two bans. Players also have the option to skip voting if they are unsure or do not wish to ban any heroes, allowing their teammates to make the decision for them.
Blizzard initially announced the introduction of hero bans to Overwatch 2 during the Season 15 announcement, which also introduced a perks system to the game. Hero bans are expected to be implemented with Season 16 on April 22, alongside the new Stadium mode featuring five-on-five matches where players can earn currency for upgrades between rounds and have the option to play in third-person perspective.
