CERMI Mujeres has addressed the need to draft a bill for the reparations of people with disabilities who have been victims of non-consensual sterilizations under a judicial incapacitation resolution.
This was highlighted by the Participation Council of the CERMI Women Foundation (FCM) at its XV ordinary meeting, where they presented the set of activities that will shape the Foundation’s agenda in the coming months.
Furthermore, they have called for the development of a positioning document for the Draft Law amending the Consolidated Text of the General Law on the rights of persons with disabilities and their social inclusion, as well as the Law on the Promotion of Personal Autonomy and Care for people in situations of dependency.
The meeting has allowed for the advancement of the main activities on the agenda of the CERMI Women Foundation, including the celebration of the VIII Sectorial Conference of FCM, which will take place on May 30, with the theme of ‘Motherhood and disability’.
In addition, the Executive Vice President of CERMI Mujeres, Ana Peláez, has presented other events on the agenda for 2025, such as the Girls and Mothers School, scheduled from July 16 to 18 in the city of Madrid, and the VIII Social Forum for Women and Girls with Disabilities, on November 24 and 26.
On the other hand, the Foundation will hold a hearing at the European Parliament to advocate for the need to classify forced sterilizations as a crime throughout the European Union, as well as the development, commissioned by the State Disability Observatory, in collaboration with INTERSOCIAL, of a Study on violence against women and girls with disabilities.
Finally, CERMI Mujeres has emphasized the upcoming publication of the work ‘Motherhood at a Crossroads’, by Helena Pérez de la Merced, winner of the 2024 Generosity Research Award, as well as the 2024 Spain Report: Human Rights of Women and Girls with Disabilities. The next ordinary meeting of the Participation Council will take place on Friday, October 17, 2025.
