The union sections of Bridgestone (CCOO, UGT, SITB, ELA, and BUB) have called for three days of strike at the Puente San Miguel plant on April 8, 10, and 15, and another three at the Basauri plant (Vizcaya) on April 8, 11, and 15, which they see as "sufficient evidence for the company to reconsider its attitude and withdraw the collective dismissal proposal presented yesterday" to find joint solutions.
On the first day of strike at the two factories, on April 8, a demonstration will take place along the main roads of the locality at each of the workplaces, as informed by the unions in a joint statement.
This decision was made after holding a virtual meeting on Wednesday in response to the Employment Regulation File (ERE) announced by the company on Tuesday, which would affect 546 workers at these plants, specifically 211 out of 418 in Cantabria and 335 out of 831 in Vizcaya.
According to the statement, the worker representatives have decided to submit a strike call to the labor authority for the two affected centers until May 31 and immediately communicate the three strike days.
If this measure does not lead the company to reconsider the situation, "we will be forced to take a tougher stance," they warned.
They have also reached out to various institutions, both regional and local, in Cantabria and Euskadi to hold meetings in these days and "convey the emotional state of the workforce and seek solutions to the contract termination procedure presented by the company’s management."
In this regard, union sources have informed Europa Press that the first meeting in Cantabria will take place on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with the Industry Councilor, Eduardo Arasti, and the next one on Friday with the mayors of Torrelavega, Javier López Estrada, and Reocín, Pablo Diestro. They do not rule out further contacts with other authorities.
In Euskadi, the meetings would be with the Basque Government (Industry, Labor, etc.), the Basauri City Council, or the Provincial Council of Vizcaya.
Furthermore, the unions have also thanked all the workers "for their spontaneous reaction yesterday and their responsible behavior." "In the face of aggression, they acted in a peaceful, supportive manner, showing maturity and once again demonstrating the difference in category between workers and the company," they pointed out.
The statement from UGT-FICA, CCOO, SITB, BUB, and ELA concludes with the slogans ‘Together, let’s defend what is ours’ and ‘The future is not expected, it is fought for.’
NEGOTIATION TABLE
On another note, union sources have informed this agency that they expect to have the negotiation table formed on Friday, April 4, to establish the meeting schedule, which would be for a month, extendable by 15 days, and will likely be extended until May due to Easter and Labor Day.
Regarding the future of the plants, they have stated that negotiating with a multinational company is "complicated", although in 2012 "something similar happened and the number of affected workers was reduced. We will see what happens here."
The union’s intention is for the ERE not to be applied, "but for that, we need workload", and the company has opted for other European plants over Puente San Miguel and Basauri.
