During her appearance at the Health Commission of the Congress of Deputies, García stated that she was there to present her work strategies and respond to questions from commission members regarding Primary Care and the Framework Statute.
She emphasized that the current moment is «absolutely wonderful» and «special» for developing new therapeutic alternatives in the field of advanced therapies. «Work is being done in many areas, and we need the involvement of public institutions. Public institutions have a lot to contribute, public hospitals have a lot to contribute, and public research has a lot to contribute,» she pointed out.
She added that there will be «real advances» in diseases that were previously considered «unsolvable» or «incurable,» so the Government of Spain and public institutions need to be involved.
GOAL: «CONTINUE ADVANCING IN EQUITABLE ACCESS»
In September of last year, García announced that she would convene the technical committee of the National Health System’s Advanced Therapies Approach Plan to work on its update and renewal, in order to «continue advancing in equitable access, expanding the network, and even introducing new therapies» for patients.
The minister then recalled that since the Plan was developed in 2018, 1,406 patients had been treated with various CAR-T therapies. «A figure that represents over 93 percent of the requests evaluated by expert groups,» she noted.
Additionally, in statements to Europa Press last May, Mónica García indicated that she hoped to bring this new Plan to the Council of Ministers in June. Regarding her department’s work on the Plan, she stated that they were being «very ambitious,» as advanced therapies had succeeded in «expanding» the therapeutic spectrum for a «host» of diseases, not just oncological ones.
In this regard, she detailed that the Health Department aims for the plan’s update to achieve «better distribution» of therapies among the different autonomous communities, and she added that her desire is to broaden the objectives of this strategy beyond just rare diseases and CAR-T.
«I believe that the future in many diseases right now lies in advanced therapies. There is an absolutely spectacular scientific advancement happening, and I think we are on the verge of many innovations and therapies that will save many lives and improve the quality of life for patients,» she asserted.
