The Popular Party has submitted a non-binding motion to the Congress of Deputies urging the Government to immediately disclose the full content of the Migration and Asylum Pact Implementation Plan sent to the European Commission in December 2024.
According to the initiative, which will be debated in the Lower House’s Committee on Labor, Social Economy, Inclusion, Social Security, and Migrations, the Popular Party demands that the Government share this document with all political groups represented in parliament.
The PP emphasizes that the approval of the new European Union Migration and Asylum Pact «represents a significant step towards a common, secure, and solidarity-based migration policy within the Union.»
This Pact establishes a regulatory framework aimed at «balancing responsibility and solidarity among member states, as well as streamlining asylum procedures, strengthening control of external borders, and effectively combating irregular migration and human trafficking networks.»
However, they warn that the progressive entry into force of the regulations comprising this Pact requires a «firm commitment» from national governments. The European Commission has set a deadline until the summer of 2026 to implement all approved measures.
Therefore, it is essential for the Spanish Government to disclose the legislative, budgetary, and infrastructure implementation work being carried out, particularly in border areas and reception facilities.
The situation in the Canary Islands demands an urgent response after over a year of neglect by the government led by Pedro Sánchez. The humanitarian crisis resulting from sustained and uncontrolled irregular entries, exceeding the capacity for reception and humanitarian assistance, highlights the lack of foresight, coordination, and control by the Spanish government, especially the Ministries of Interior and Migrations.
The PP is concerned that despite submitting the Migration and Asylum Pact Implementation Plan to the European Commission in December 2024, the Government has not yet disclosed its content or shared it with the political groups represented in Congress. This situation is deemed unacceptable given the importance of the matter to the Popular Party.
In addition, the Popular Party calls for an urgent meeting with all autonomous communities, especially those experiencing the greatest migration pressure, to inform and agree on legislative changes stemming from the new Migration and Asylum Pact, ensuring their active participation in the design and implementation of these changes.
They also advocate for enhancing effective control of Spanish borders, both land and maritime, with particular focus on areas like the Canary Islands. They recommend immediate measures to prevent and combat irregular migration, involving the State Security Forces and Agencies and the European agency Frontex.
Furthermore, they propose promoting greater EU involvement in controlling external borders and balancing responsibilities among member states within the community to ensure that European solidarity translates into financial support for countries most affected by migration pressure.
