The price of the wholesale electricity market, known as the ‘pool’, will rise this Saturday to 16.17 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), a price 47.81% higher than the cost of electricity on Friday.
In addition, for eight hours of the day, electricity will be cost-free or even negative, in a period from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., when it will return to a value of 2.2 euros/MWh.
After hitting a historic minimum of -10 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) this Thursday, the minimum on Friday will be -3 euros/MWh, a figure that will be repeated between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., according to provisional data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.
However, these negative prices in the wholesale market do not directly translate to the bill of customers on the regulated tariff, as there are fixed costs for the electricity consumer, such as tolls, charges, and system adjustments.
The maximum price of the day will be recorded between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. this Friday, reaching 63.8 euros/MWh.
CALCULATION METHOD OF PVPC
Likewise, the ‘pool’ does not exactly represent the final amount in the price of electricity for a consumer under the regulated tariff, as a new PVPC calculation method was adopted since 2024, incorporating a basket of prices for medium and long term to avoid strong fluctuations, without losing the short-term price references that promote savings and efficient consumption.
Specifically, the connection proportion with the ‘pool’ price will gradually decrease to incorporate references from futures markets, so that they represented 25% in 2024, 40% in this 2025, and will reach 55% from 2026 onwards.
