Real Madrid fulfills in Getafe before the Cup
A goal from Güler was enough with suffering to keep the whites in the fight for the League before the cup final
Real Madrid defeated (0-1) Getafe this Wednesday in matchday 33 of LaLiga EA Sports, a derby at the Coliseum in the south of the capital very hard-fought for the whites, who maintain their candidacy thanks to Arda Güler’s goal and Thibaut Courtois’ saves.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side ended up hanging on in a field where FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid stumbled, but they saved three points to stay four points behind the Catalans. With five matchdays still to go, the current league champions showed their intention not to give any more ground to Barça, their rival also in the Copa del Rey final this Saturday at La Cartuja in Seville.
The rotations thinking about the Cup worked well for Ancelotti, although David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga ended up injured, a team committed in defensive balance and eager to make their coach doubt. On the other side, Getafe, with a back five and a system that didn’t work out, was not true to itself and was at the mercy of a Madrid without hurry but without pause during the first half.
The home team tried to shake up the Madrid team, but Luis Milla missed the clearest chance for Getafe, who had little control over the visiting attacks. Fran García tested David Soria, and after 20 hectic minutes, annoying the rival defense, the whites found the 0-1 with a powerful shot from Güler from outside the box.
Bordalás’ team did not press well and let Madrid dominate and play with a feeling of comfort on the field, capable of defending well and coming close to a second goal with a nice combination between Enrick and Vinicius that was cleared off the line by Djené. After that, the break benefited the hosts and vice versa.
The Getafe coach changed to a 4-4-2 system, with Coba da Costa providing depth on the left wing and Álvaro for the finishing. Meanwhile, Madrid lost their playmaker in Güler, couldn’t find him even with the entry of Jude Bellingham, and started to suffer chances from a much more recognizable Getafe side.
A counterattack almost single-handedly by Vinícius forced Soria into action, and, more notably, Mauro Arambarri, Getafe’s top scorer, missed the chance to equalize. With the result hanging in the balance, Madrid had to walk a tightrope, especially when Camavinga got injured with no substitution available. It was just over ten minutes, with added time, where Courtois held the whites together.
The Belgian goalkeeper stopped a back-heeled shot from Peter Federico and a shot from Juanmi in the same play, and in the final moments, another chance from Ángel while Madrid claimed a penalty at the other end for Rodrygo. Thus ended a tense derby that marks the third consecutive defeat for Getafe, who cannot relax in the fight for survival and keeps the pressure on Madrid before the Cup.
