The contribution of 5.25 million euros from Aecid to the WHO is part of the 60 million euros in funding that Spain will provide for various projects to the WHO, as announced by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in November 2024.
Spain’s commitment also includes support for «critical health programs» in countries such as Jordan, Mali, and Sudan, as well as other initiatives, as indicated by the World Health Organization.
«Spain has long been a close and steadfast partner of the WHO and global health,» said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The health official expressed gratitude to Spain for its «flexibility in funding our work, which helps make the WHO stronger and more independent and allows us to provide the services that countries and communities need.»
Spain’s commitment to global health is highlighted by its entry into the WHO Executive Board for the period 2025-2028, nearly two decades after its last membership.
Looking ahead, the WHO has announced that Spain will host the IV International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville from June 30 to July 3, 2025, with the aim of making health financing a «fundamental priority.»
