Spain has recorded the February with the lowest number of women killed by gender-based violence in the entire historical series, with one case, according to data from the Government Delegation against Gender Violence consulted by Europa Press.
Specifically, during the month of February, a total of 101 women have been killed by their partner or ex-partner since 2003. This is the eighth month with the highest number of cases of gender-based violence, after July (137), August (120), June (117), January (113), December (110), May (108), and September (106).
In this line, the February with the highest number of women killed was in the year 2017, when ten gender-based crimes were recorded. This year is followed by 2007, with nine cases; 2008, with eight; 2020, with seven; 2011, with six; 2004, 2005, 2009, and 2014, with five; 2003, 2006, 2010, 2013, and 2016, with four; 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024, with three; 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2022, with two; and 2025, with one.
Likewise, the statistics from the department led by Ana Redondo show that thirteen months have recorded a single victim of gender-based violence since 2003. In this sense, these have been December 2007, November 2009, April 2015, May 2018, December 2019, April 2020, January and November 2021, October 2022, October 2023, May 2024, and January and February 2025. Additionally, the month of January 2009 stands out, when no gender-based crime occurred.
In total, since records began, 1,296 women have been killed by gender-based violence, two of them in 2025. The latest victim is a 48-year-old woman allegedly killed by her partner on February 9, 2025, in Malaga. She had three minor children and there were previous reports of gender-based violence against the alleged perpetrator.
This case adds to that of a 39-year-old woman killed in Langreo (Asturias) on January 31, allegedly by her partner, the first gender-based crime of the year. Thus, the first month of 2025 became the third January with the fewest victims of gender-based violence since 2003, after 2009 and 2021.
