The Government of La Rioja has reported that, in the first three months of this year, they have attended to 18 unaccompanied minors without family in Spain in our region. As of March 28, 2025, the Executive of Gonzalo Capellán states that «we have a 100% occupancy in the 82 regular resources, 100% in the immediate care center, and 98% in the center for minors aged 0 to 6 years.»
In addition, during the year 2024, they assisted 17 unaccompanied young people without family in Spain in the child protection service of La Rioja.
The Riojan Executive has already provided the Ministry of Youth and Childhood with the requested data from the autonomous communities regarding their capacity to host minors.
Furthermore, it has been communicated that as of March 28, 2025, «15 unaccompanied foreign minors without family in Spain are occupying residential places (apartments) in our protection system.»
135 PLACES
The Executive highlights that La Rioja has 135 places distributed as follows:
– Children’s Apartment La Cometa (0 to 6 years) with 18 places, directly managed, which despite having a high number of places for what is considered a housing unit, has all the ingredients to be considered a home for the girls and boys being cared for. They are accommodated while a foster family is found or they can return to their own family.
– 11 foster apartments (6 to 18 years): 82 regular places plus 5 emergency places (managed by Fundación Diagrama) for minors aged 6 to 18 years, with a few exceptions. These are medium and long-stay apartments.
– Immediate Care Apartment (managed by FAIM, Foundation for Integral Care of Minors) for minors between 6 and 18 years, with some exceptions. It is a short-stay residence with a capacity for 8 minors and is temporary, until the minor returns to their family or moves to a foster apartment.
– Additionally, «we have 22 medium stay places in therapeutic centers in other autonomous communities.»
INCREASE BY 12% IN PLACES
The forecast for 2025 is to increase the places by 12%, reaching 153 in 2 new apartments with 8 and 6 places and an additional 4 places in the Immediate Care Center.
