To reach these conclusions, the OCU conducted a hydration test in a specialized laboratory using a corneometer (an instrument used to measure hydration) on the forearm skin of a group of volunteers.
This test determined that the 14 lotions are effective. It also indicates that the hydration result of their respective formulas, based on water, oil, emulsifiers, humectants, occlusives, and emollients, is «perfectly comparable.»
The usage tests, carried out by volunteers from unidentified bottles, also received positive evaluations, both in terms of ease of application and in texture, hydrating sensation, and skin smoothness. However, in this case, more differences are noticed: Eucerin is the overall best-rated lotion; while Neutrogena and Natural Honey stand out for their lower greasy sensation, and Nivea, Dove, and Eucerin for their pleasant scent on the skin.
The environmental impact of the packaging does show greater differences, in this case in favor of Dove, which uses recycled material, as do Yves Rocher, Weleda, and Nivea. However, in all the packaging, there is leftover product in the bottom that cannot be used.
OCU CHALLENGES EXPENSIVE CREAMS: «THEY ALL HYDRATE EQUALLY»
The Organization believes that labeling can also be improved, especially regarding claims, such as, for example, «dermatologically tested and compatible with the skin,» which implies a feeling of being safer for the skin when all cosmetics should be so.
However, the significant difference lies in the price, which ranges from 0.40 euros/100ml for some white-label brands, like ‘Nutre’ from Deliplus (Mercadona), to 10.20 euros/100ml for ‘Lait Riche’ from L’Occitane en Provence, making it 25 times more expensive. Both include some allergenic fragrance; up to five in Mercadona’s product.
If this is an aspect to be avoided, other lotions can be chosen, such as ‘Lipikar Lait’ from La Roche Posay (3.90 euros/100ml) or ‘Deep Hydration’ from Neutrogena (2.10 euros/100ml), ‘Hydrating Lotion’ from Cerave (3.60 euros/100 ml), or ‘Xeracalm’ from Avene (5.20 euros/100ml).
WHEN TO USE A MOISTURIZING BODY LOTION?
Finally, the OCU clarifies that these lotions are recommended for treating slightly dry skin, more common in dry and cold climates where air conditioning and heating are frequently used, depending on the season.
At this point, it is indicated that if you have dry or very dry skin, more moisturizing products with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, ceramides, and glycerin should be prioritized. Additionally, using gentle cleansers and avoiding long showers, lasting more than 10 minutes, with very hot water is advised as they strip away the skin’s natural oils and dehydrate it.
