Belarra calls «racist» to PP and Vox and urges socialists to choose which side they are on
The Government partners have come together this Tuesday in Congress to pressure the PSOE on the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) to regularize half a million foreign people in an extraordinary way.
Specifically, the political groups have debated in the Lower House the non-legislative proposal of Podemos to regularize migrants residing in Spain before May of this year, regardless of their administrative situation. This is what the ‘purple’ parties have agreed with Sumar, BNG, EH Bildu, and ERC in a substitution amendment.
In this sense, the Podemos deputy, Ione Belarra, has accused the PSOE of blocking the ILP, first in the Congress Board and then in the Committee, as well as using Junts «as an excuse» not to approve the initiative. Furthermore, she has referred to the reform of the Immigration Regulation approved by the Government on November 19 of last year, which she said is «pure makeup.»
«The question this afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, is simple. With whom will the Socialist Party, Junts, and the PNV be? With the social majority, with the people who want the administrative regularization of these individuals, or with the racists of the Popular Party and Vox? That is the question that needs to be answered,» Belarra questioned. After the deputy’s question, the Hemicycle has clamored against her words. «I have called them racists because they are racists, because they implement racist policies. Therefore, that’s what they are. It’s not an insult, it’s a description,» she added.
Likewise, she has emphasized that the extraordinary regularization of migrants in an irregular administrative situation is a «matter of pure justice.» However, she has indicated that this does not solve the «set of problems» of migration policy. For this, she has urged to create «legal and safe pathways» for legal migration.
PSOE APPEALS TO «CONSENSUS»
In the turn of spokespeople, the socialist Vicente Montávez has defended a migration that is «regulated, safe, and respectful» of human rights, which guarantees «inclusion, coexistence, and strengthening» of society. In this sense, he has appealed to seek the «maximum consensus» in the processing of the ILP as law. «It is necessary to seek the greatest possible consensus to provide stability and dignity to those who enrich our society,» he defended.
Likewise, Montávez has explained that the arrival of migrants must be accompanied by a «real commitment.» «It is not enough to accept their presence. Rights and opportunities must be guaranteed, which will also entail obligations,» he emphasized.
On the part of the PP, Sofía Acedo, who has shown herself against the Podemos initiative, has accused Belarra of «covering up» alleged sexual offenders. «Here, the only xenophobic, racist, sectarian, and macho in the book is you. You are the one who also covers up alleged sexual offenders because they are your messianic leaders,» she stated.
On the other hand, Acedo has criticized the PSOE for generating «false expectations» to the migrant population with a «free-for-all regularization.» Furthermore, she explained that within the framework of the European Union, there are no mass regularization processes. «Everything is substantiated in individualized procedures with thorough compliance with requirements,» she added.
For Sumar, Vicenç Vidal has urged the PSOE to reach agreements on this matter. «Agreements that do not betray the will of the people, of the people who have made it,» he stated.
Rocío de Meer, from Vox, who has advocated for «re-emigration» in her intervention, said that Podemos wants to perpetuate the opening of borders «that ends the lives of Spaniards and Europeans.» «The streets of Spain and Europe are saying enough. But for you, it seems that it is not enough yet,» she lamented.
For EH Bildu, Marije Fullaondo has asked the parliamentary groups to be «brave» and to support the initiative. Furthermore, she lamented that while the processing of the ILP sleeps, the reform of the Immigration Regulation will come into force in May and «will negatively affect the regularization of different groups of migrants who will not be able to access regularization through ordinary channels.»
Jordi Salvador, from ERC, reproached the Government for letting the ILP die in the previous legislature and also criticized the new Immigration Regulation that «continues to leave out thousands of people.» «The Government prefers to have hundreds of thousands of people without papers, exploited, and vulnerable,» he affirmed.
On the part of Junts, Josep Maria Cervera has insisted on the transfer of migration competences to Catalonia. «The migration policy that Junts want is the one that will allow us to respond in a timely manner to the complexity of the phenomenon and the demographic challenge of today and the future,» he assured.
Finally, PNV, Mikel Legarda, recalled that his party supported the consideration of the ILP in Congress. In this line, he indicated that they share the same idea as they did back then when they stated that regularization should be done «case by case.»
SIX MONTHS TO APPROVE INSTRUCTIONS
According to the initiative agreed upon by the Government partners, to which Europa Press has had access, they urge the Government to approve, within six months, through a Royal Decree or Council of Ministers Agreement, a procedure and instructions to request a legal residence authorization for exceptional circumstances extraordinarily after which it will be possible to modify towards other residence authorizations provided for in the general immigration regulations.
Furthermore, they request to ensure that applicants for international protection may access this exceptional residence authorization «without the obligation to withdraw their asylum application in accordance with the recommendations of the Ombudsman on the matter.»
