The Spanish MotoGP rider Marc Márquez (Ducati) admitted his «serious mistake» this Sunday at the Grand Prix of the Americas, where he crashed midway through the race, but made it clear that it is not a «disaster» and that he is still in the running for the World Championship.
«I made a mistake, all that’s left is to apologize, but I would do it again. It’s a matter of milliseconds, lapses in tension, in concentration. I was very focused, I was very clear on what I had to do,» he said in statements to Dazn, collected by Europa Press, after his ‘0’ in Austin.
«It was one of my strong points, it means taking risks. I had already cut the chicane several laps and then I fell. Yesterday I wasn’t Superman and today it’s not a disaster. These are mistakes that have to be learned from. The positive thing is that despite making a serious mistake, we are second in the World Championship, just one point behind the leader,» he added.
The rider from Cervera lost the lead to his brother Álex Márquez and also saw his teammate Francesco Bagnaia closing in, after a race at COTA that started in an unprecedented way, with the Ducati rider heading to the pit lane intending to abort the start with rain tires on a track that was more dry than wet.
«When there were seven minutes left I told the team, ‘Is there time to change tires?’ ‘No, so when there are two minutes left I’m going to leave the grid, probably everyone will follow me and there will be a delayed start.’ That’s how it turned out. I was very clear on the regulations. It’s our job to know the rules, not just go fast but control everything,» he stated.
«Today I did everything perfectly. I made the mistake at the chicane. I fell, I apologize, but riders don’t want to fall. Yesterday there were all praises, now there will be criticism, and in Qatar it will be another race,» he added, already thinking about the fourth race of the season.
