MasOrange has signed a collaboration agreement with Iryo to deploy a pioneering solution in Spain within the trains of the private operator, which is 45% owned by the Italian public operator Trenitalia, 31% by AirNostrum, and 24% by Globalvia, aimed at reducing the rate of dropped calls by more than 60%.
As explained in a statement by MasOrange on Friday, the solution enhances the experience of the group’s brands’ customers with the mobile network, through a set of repeaters that propagate the mobile signal inside the train carriages.
«This innovative antenna system captures the signal from outside the train to carry it to a set of repeaters that propagate the signal through the carriages, improving indoor coverage,» MasOrange explained.
In this way, the challenges faced by mobile coverage inside trains are overcome, as the signal of a mobile device depends on the ‘line of sight’ with the signal source, which can be interrupted by obstacles such as tunnels, mountains, and buildings.
Therefore, during the second half of 2024, MasOrange and Iryo conducted joint tests with the new pioneering transmission system on the section that connects Madrid with Cuenca, obtaining «very satisfactory» results, increasing the signal strength reaching the terminals of MasOrange group’s customers.
During this experience, thanks to the use of these onboard repeaters, a reduction in dropped calls of over 60% could be measured, meaning that almost two out of every three calls that used to drop during a conversation no longer do so.
Given the «radical improvement» in the customer experience thanks to this system, MasOrange and Iryo agreed to deploy it on all routes.
This solution, already implemented in other countries such as Sweden, Norway, Greece, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Russia, and Germany, with several railway operators, has proven to be a «very good option to improve voice service quality, and now Iryo, hand in hand with MasOrange, is implementing it for the first time in Spain».
