The Spanish U-21 coach, Santi Denia, emphasized that they could not offer more to the footballer Assane Diao, who they went to see in Italy and who chose to play for Cameroon instead of Spain. He stated that they will not force anyone to participate in the upcoming European Championship, which overlaps with the Club World Cup.
Diao had previously played for Spain in various youth categories and had been part of the U-19 European Championship-winning team. Denia mentioned that they had provided him with all the experience and competition they could offer, but ultimately, the decision was personal.
Regarding the selection process for the European Championship, Denia highlighted the importance of players being available and committed, especially since it is not a FIFA date. He also touched upon the inclusion of César Tárrega due to Dean Huijsen’s call-up to the senior national team.
The coach refrained from revealing whether Huijsen or Cubarsí would be available for the European Championship in June, considering the evolving scenarios and the potential Liga de Naciones final.
Denia acknowledged that some players, like Raúl Asencio, skip the youth categories and go straight to the senior team. He emphasized the need for players to be convinced and committed to representing Spain.
In terms of scheduling conflicts between the European U-21 Championship and the Club World Cup, Denia expressed understanding but mentioned that they are at the mercy of the calendar set by FIFA.
The coach also addressed the situation where Barcelona and Osasuna would play on March 27, with the U-21 team having players from Barcelona. He stated that decisions would be made based on club requests and the Spanish Football Federation’s decision.
Finally, Denia praised the restructuring of the Spanish Football Federation, highlighting Manuel Fernández’s role as the coordinator of youth national teams, supported by Jesús Rosagro. He welcomed new ideas and support for the development of Spanish football at all levels.
