Earlier this year, Perplexity AI entered the competition to acquire TikTok amidst the looming threat of a ban. The AI search engine company is now presenting its plans for TikTok if their bid is successful.
In a detailed blog post, Perplexity AI outlined its vision for «rebuilding TikTok in America,» which includes restructuring the app’s algorithm, incorporating Community Notes, and merging short-form videos into its search engine.
Despite the numerous potential buyers, it remains uncertain how seriously Perplexity AI’s bid is being taken. Recent reports suggest that ByteDance’s US investors are considering a deal with Oracle to appease President Donald Trump, with ByteDance preferring this option.
Nonetheless, Perplexity AI argues that they are the most suitable candidates to take over TikTok. They claim that their unique position allows them to reconstruct TikTok’s algorithm without monopolizing it, maintaining technical excellence while preserving independence from major tech companies. They believe that freeing content feeds from the influence of foreign governments and monopolies benefits society as a whole.
Perplexity AI proposes to rebuild TikTok’s recommendation algorithm from scratch, make the «For You» feed open source, and introduce «Community Notes features» along with citations from their search engine to establish TikTok as the most neutral and trustworthy platform globally. This approach contrasts with TikTok’s current fact-checking system, which relies on international media organizations.
This marks the first time that Perplexity AI has publicly shared their detailed vision for TikTok. Interestingly, some of their strategies, such as open-sourcing the «For You» feed and incorporating Community Notes, seem inspired by Elon Musk’s approach for X. With the deadline for Trump’s executive order approaching, a decision regarding TikTok’s future is imminent. Trump has indicated a willingness to extend the deadline if necessary.
