Productos sostenibles para combatir pobreza y cambio climático

Organizations of Fair Trade have issued a call to citizens to contribute to the fight against inequalities, poverty, and the effects of climate change by consuming these products on World Fair Trade Day, celebrated every second Saturday of May, this year under the motto ‘There is a Fair Trade product for every moment of the day’.

According to the United Nations, 700 million people still live in poverty, and the number of people suffering from hunger has increased over the past 15 years. In response, NGOs point out that Fair Trade is an alternative that helps address these global challenges, so consumers can choose food, clothing, accessories, personal hygiene products, household items, or toys on this day and throughout the year.

By choosing these products, human and labor rights are guaranteed: decent conditions, adequate wages, prices covering sustainable production costs, equal pay for women and men, and no child labor exploitation. Additionally, their production is environmentally friendly.

Fair Trade sales in Spain in 2023 exceeded 156 million euros, a 7% increase from the previous year. The 2025 campaign can be followed on social media with the hashtag #FairTradeEveryDay and has been promoted by the State Coordinator of Fair Trade, funded by AECID.

Furthermore, events are scheduled in various locations. In Madrid, they will take place from 10:00 to 14:30 at the Fair Trade store of Setem MCM (c/ Gaztambide, 50), with a tasting of all kinds of Fair Trade products.

OVER 60,000 BENEFICIARIES IN 46 COUNTRIES

On the other hand, as announced by Oxfam Intermón, Fair Trade promoted by this organization benefited over 60,831 people in 46 countries across Africa, Latin America, and Asia during 2024-2025. It also states that consumers spent over 13 million euros on Oxfam Intermón products during that period.

Through the promotion of ethical and sustainable production and distribution practices, Oxfam Intermón highlights that it generates positive changes in areas such as combating climate change, women’s rights, decent incomes, and strengthening communities and groups.

Regarding climate issues, Oxfam Intermón works on projects to reduce carbon footprint: 82% of the producing organizations collaborating with the NGO have obtained organic certification, and 57% implement circular economy practices, reflecting their commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

In terms of women’s rights, Oxfam Intermón’s Fair Trade is a vehicle to empower women and promote their leadership in strategic decision-making. 38% of positions on the boards of producing organizations are held by women, and 13% of those organizations have a female CEO. Additionally, 80% of the organizations have implemented gender equality programs, promoting participation and development.

This model of Fair Trade contributes to improving people’s livelihoods, benefiting over 60,831 individuals, 33% of whom are women. It is estimated that with a total purchase of 3.3 million euros, a fair, sufficient, and stable income has been provided for a year to an equivalent of 2,487 people.

In terms of public impact, Oxfam Intermón has achieved a double impact: access to decent work in the countries where the producing people work and the commitment of consumers to responsible consumption. During this period, it is estimated that 278,373 people have purchased Fair Trade products from Oxfam Intermón. Additionally, 807 individuals, 82% of whom are women, are volunteers in the network of 30 stores that the organization has in Spain to support these initiatives.
