In an exciting collaboration, Roblox is receiving a significant speed upgrade on Chromebooks. Google announced on Thursday that a new x86 version of the popular online game platform and creation system is now twice as fast as the previous Android version, which was the only option for playing Roblox on ChromeOS.
The intersection of Chromebooks (widely used in education) and Roblox (a favorite among kids, for better or for worse) makes the improved performance on ChromeOS a logical development. While there are more ARM-based Chromebooks available now, the majority still operate on x86 architecture.
Google stated that the new Roblox build offers smoother gameplay, faster load times, and an overall enhanced Roblox experience. Specifically, players can expect a 99 percent increase in framerate in the virtual pet game Adopt Me! and a 67 percent boost in the role-playing simulation Brookhaven RP. Load times have also been improved, with up to a 29 percent decrease in time taken to go from starting the game to the login page.
To celebrate the launch of the x86 version, Google and Roblox are offering speed-themed in-game items for Chromebook users. Players can redeem a jetpack adorned with a Chrome logo for their avatar, allowing them to soar through the game like a Google-sponsored Buzz Lightyear. Additionally, users can redeem a «hoverboard» (resembling a OneWheel) for faster ground travel. Both items can be found on Google’s perks page.
This collaboration is not the first between Google and Roblox. Last year, they partnered on a unique game aimed at educating children about online safety, aptly named Be Internet Awesome World.
According to Engadget, users can easily install the x86 version of Roblox directly from the Play Store. Despite the Play Store being the usual source for the Android version of the game, it will automatically provide the appropriate build for Chromebook users.
