Se reduce en un 18,2% la detección global de casos de mpox en febrero

While the Eastern Mediterranean region reported a 50 percent monthly increase in cases in February, the rest of the regions saw a decrease of 50 percent (Americas), 39 percent (Western Pacific region), 21 percent (Europe), 15 percent (Africa), and 12 percent (Southeast Asia).

Uganda has been the country that has reported the most cases in the last six weeks, with up to 300 cases per week, although the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains the most affected nation in the region since the beginning of the outbreak.

Although suspected cases in the DRC are stabilizing, «it is not clear if this reflects a real decrease,» as testing has also decreased in recent weeks, and both clade Ia and Ib continue to circulate in the territory; since its first detection in September 2023, clade Ib has been detected in ten provinces of the DRC (South Kivu, North Kivu, Kinshasa, Kasai, Tshopo, Tanganyika, Haut-Katanga, Mai Ndombe, Lomami, and Kongo Central).

Burundi, on the other hand, has shown a consistent downward trend with less than 50 new cases per week, compared to the 200 weekly cases recorded during its peak, as well as a «very low» overall lethality.

Countries such as Brazil, the Republic of the Congo, and Tanzania have already reported their first cases of clade Ib of mpox, and the Republic of the Congo is the only country, apart from the DRC, where the co-circulation of clades Ia and Ib has been documented.

Other African countries that have detected community transmission include Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia; sporadic cases or travel-related cases have been reported in Angola, the Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe.

Outside of Africa, 15 countries have reported cases of clade Ib: the United Kingdom (ten cases), Germany (eight cases), China (seven cases), Belgium (five cases), Thailand (four cases), the United States (four cases), Qatar (three cases), France (two cases), Brazil, Canada, India, Oman, Pakistan, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates (one case each), with no sustained community transmission or deaths associated with clade Ib.

From January 1, 2022, to February 28, 2025, a total of 132.97 confirmed cases of mpox have been reported, including 304 deaths, in 131 countries, with a global case fatality rate of 0.2 percent.
