Imagine yourself hurtling through space in a torpedo-shaped vessel, engaged in the risky task of salvaging resources in a planet’s crowded orbit, when suddenly a massive, alien fish-like creature emerges out of nowhere and starts snapping at your tail. It must be quite a stressful day at work, to say the least. Under such circumstances, one could be forgiven for accidentally crashing the ship. However, in the Playdate game, your supervisor is not exactly sympathetic.
If you happen to collide with an asteroid or a drone, be prepared to endure endless ridicule from a sarcastic feline who compiles your performance evaluations. Should the colossal fish catch you with its enormous teeth, any resulting damages are deemed your responsibility for «feeding» it, a clear violation of company regulations. This feline criticizes every mistake you make, which, oddly enough, adds an element of humor to the experience. In a way, it almost becomes a reward for completing a run. Each time I catastrophically failed my turn, I was not only eager to see my scores but also curious to discover what new insult the cat had in store for me.
The primary objective in Suborbital Salvage is to gather as many of the small «C» tokens as possible and travel as far as you can while navigating a hazardous space environment.
Controlling the ship can be somewhat challenging initially. You must utilize the crank to orient it correctly while simultaneously pressing the B button (or D-pad buttons) to activate the thrusters. Mastering the physics takes time, especially with the persistent fish tailing you. As you progress, the areas become more intricate, requiring you to evade asteroids, mines, and even massive space mushrooms, and maneuver through complex pipe systems. Flying through rings provides a speed boost to escape the fish, as does executing a 360-degree flip with the ship.
The game kept me on edge, focused on my survival at every moment, yet it is not needlessly difficult. Once I familiarized myself with the controls and the behavior of my ship, I was able to make significant progress. However, the leaderboards display how you measure up against other players in various aspects of the mission, such as salvage recovery, distance, and overall performance, which can be quite humbling. The remarks from the cat also contribute to the experience. Come for the exhilarating space adventure, stay for the witty feline banter.
Some of the most memorable lines include: «I don’t know if it’s occurred to you but… You really should try flying through the rings, not into them»; «You know, most people try to steer AWAY from space rocks»; and «Are you between a rock and a hard place? No really. Where did you go?» At one point, the cat simply said, «Just be better.» (In the Settings menu, there’s an option to switch the dialogue from «Roast me» to «Shutup cat,» but really, why would you do that?) Suborbital Salvage, developed by Games Right Meow, is available in the Playdate Catalog for $8.
