A live-action Pacific Rim TV series is currently in development at Amazon, as reported by Variety. The news of this exciting project was first revealed in 2024, with Variety announcing that Eric Heisserer, the screenwriter of Arrival, was set to develop and write the show.
The upcoming series is said to serve as a prequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s original Pacific Rim film, which showcased the epic battles between giant mechs and monstrous Kaiju, along with the courageous humans who pilot them. Legendary, the production company behind Pacific Rim, is teaming up with Amazon MGM to bring this series to life. It seems that the studio is following a similar successful formula used for the «MonsterVerse» franchise featuring Godzilla and King Kong. In fact, a prequel and sequel series titled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters streamed on Apple TV+ in 2023, expanding the universe of these iconic creatures.
Heisserer, known for his skill in adapting existing material, has a track record of successfully translating complex stories to the screen. His work on Arrival transformed an experimental short story into a compelling blockbuster, while his involvement in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone cleverly intertwined different storylines from the source material. With Pacific Rim, Heisserer faces a more straightforward adaptation task.
Although there has been no official announcement from Amazon regarding the release date of the series, fans of Pacific Rim have been treated to additional content in recent years. Following the original film’s debut in 2013, a live-action sequel titled Pacific Rim Uprising was released in 2018. Additionally, Netflix launched an anime sequel called Pacific Rim: The Black in 2021, further expanding the franchise.
