NVIDIA has finally announced the release of a playable demo for Half-Life 2 RTX, initially revealed in 2023. Gamers who own the original game on Steam can access the preview on March 18th to experience how Orbifold Studios has reimagined Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt with ray tracing technology. The full release is expected to follow at a later date.
In anticipation of the demo launch, NVIDIA is also making available RTX Remix, the modding toolkit used by Orbifold to remaster HL2, to the public. This suite, which can be downloaded now, includes support for various cutting-edge technologies from NVIDIA, such as multi-frame generation via DLSS 4. RTX Remix boasts an intuitive interface that allows modders to seamlessly incorporate fully ray-traced lighting and AI-enhanced textures into older games. For more ambitious teams, RTX Remix opens up the possibility to rebuild every asset within a game.
Beyond the opportunity to rediscover Half-Life 2 in a fresh light, there’s another compelling reason to revisit the game next week. Viktor Antonov, the visionary art director behind Half-Life 2, sadly passed away in February at the age of 52. While video games are a collaborative endeavor, Antonov played a significant role in shaping the visual identity of Half-Life 2 by designing City 17 and the iconic Combine technology.
