Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has denounced the «macho gaze» in the images of Princess Leonor in a bikini in Uruguay and stated that «the problem is the gaze.»
«These biases of machismo and machistas and these macho reactions are part of daily life. We encounter them in relation to those photos and we encounter them in relation to many other things,» Redondo stated at the informative breakfast at Fórum Europa at the Real Casino Gran Círculo in Madrid. This comes after the magazine ‘Diez Minutos’ published images of Princess Leonor in a bikini in Uruguay.
However, Redondo mentioned that what concerns her is that so much importance is given to it, and she indicated that the «problem» lies in the gaze and those who profit from that image. «She is a young woman sunbathing. What importance does that have? She is the Princess of Asturias but could be my daughter. The problem is the gaze. The problem is not with the princess, the problem is with those who look at the princess, those who capture that image, those who profit because generally behind machismo there is also a huge business, those who profit and make money from it,» she pointed out.
She also noted that machismo is «embedded in societies.» Additionally, she added that it is the first cultural globalization in history. «And we haven’t gotten rid of it and it will take time to do so,» she added.
She also emphasized that these behaviors are «not exceptional.» «I wish they didn’t exist, but I do agree that it is a macho gaze towards a young woman who has every right to sunbathe,» she reiterated.
