The Congress will vote this Wednesday on Podemos’ non-binding proposition to regularize migrants residing in Spain before 2022, aiming to accelerate the extraordinary regularization of half a million foreign individuals. The proposal urges the Government to approve, «immediately,» within a maximum period of two months, the regularization of foreign individuals in irregular administrative situations who were in Spanish territory before November 2021.
«It is an ethical, political, and democratic obligation that would give our country great dignity in the eyes of the world, the regularization of all these individuals currently in irregular situations, as well as the opening of legal and safe pathways for those who wish to migrate from their countries without risking their lives,» states the explanatory memorandum.
Podemos laments that the debate on migrant arrivals is not focusing on the fundamental perspective of Human Rights, which are inherent to every individual regardless of their administrative status. The party argues that the issue is being approached from a false perspective of security and public order, leading to migrants being portrayed as a potential threat in social imagery. The debate is being distorted by misinformation campaigns and fake news spread daily on social media and some news outlets, resulting in the criminalization and dehumanization of migrants, contrary to the values of a democratic society.
Furthermore, Podemos accuses President Pedro Sánchez of promoting a degrading perspective towards human beings with his statements and announcements. During his recent tour of countries like Mauritania, Gambia, and Senegal at the end of August, President Sánchez hardened his stance on irregular migration, advocating for the mass deportation of individuals in irregular administrative situations back to their countries of origin.
The party also criticizes the Sánchez government for aligning itself politically and ideologically with other EU governments that have long been engaging in practices contrary to Human Rights. Podemos seeks a vote in the Lower House to address the blockage faced by the initiative to regularize half a million foreign individuals. The proposal, initially signed by over 700,000 people, advocates for the regularization of individuals in irregular administrative situations living in Spain before November 2021.
According to Podemos, this regularization would affect a minimum of half a million individuals, granting them full citizenship rights and putting an end to the exploitation, institutional invisibility, legal vulnerability, and de facto exclusion from essential public services like education and healthcare caused by their irregular status. The party argues that this regularization would also bring significant economic and fiscal benefits to the Spanish state and society as a whole.
«IT IS NOT TRUE THAT SPAIN IS NOT READY FOR THIS REGULARIZATION»
Podemos emphasizes that it is not true that Spain is unprepared to carry out this regularization or provide legal support to individuals continuously arriving in the country through various means like maritime, land, or air routes.
«The lack of safe and legal migration pathways leads to thousands of deaths each year as people attempt to irregularly enter our country and other EU countries, a true massacre of human beings directly caused by our countries’ migration policies,» Podemos asserts.
