The price of the wholesale electricity market, known as the ‘pool’, will decrease this Sunday to 11 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), a price 32% lower than the cost of electricity set on Saturday.
In addition, for ten hours of the day, the electricity will be cost-free or even negative, in a range from 09:00 to 19:00, when it will return to a value of 3.52 euros/MWh.
After hitting a historic minimum of -10 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) last Thursday, the minimum on Sunday will be -5.01 euros/MWh, a figure that will be repeated between 14:00 and 15:00, according to provisional data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.
However, these negative prices in the wholesale market do not directly translate into the bill for customers on the regulated tariff, as there are fixed costs for the electricity consumer, such as tolls, charges, and system adjustments.
The maximum price of the day will be recorded between 00:00 and 01:00 on Sunday, reaching 36.13 euros/MWh, while between 21:00 and 23:00, it will reach 35 euros/MWh.
MÉTODO DE CÁLCULO DEL PVPC
Furthermore, the ‘pool’ does not precisely represent the final amount in the electricity price for a consumer under the regulated tariff, as a new calculation method for the PVPC was adopted in 2024, which includes a basket of medium and long-term prices to avoid sharp fluctuations, while still maintaining short-term price references that promote savings and efficient consumption.
Specifically, the proportion linked to the ‘pool’ price will gradually decrease to incorporate references from futures markets, with these representing 25% in 2024, 40% in 2025, and reaching 55% from 2026 onwards.
