After several weeks of Google Maps users reporting that their Timelines had been erased and all the places they had visited were gone, Google has officially acknowledged that some users’ data was deleted and, in some cases, cannot be recovered. Genevieve Park, a spokesperson for Google, stated, «We experienced a technical issue that resulted in the deletion of Timeline data for some individuals.» Only users who had backups enabled will be able to restore their Timelines, according to the statement.
Google recently suffered data loss, and it seems that backups are not enabled by default. To activate them, users must access Your Timeline in the Maps app and adjust the settings from the cloud icon. This incident led to some users losing years’ worth of location history. While some users who had backups enabled before the issue were able to recover their Timeline data, others have reported difficulties in retrieving all their data even after importing their backups.
