Tomás Rodríguez has been unanimously elected as the new Secretary General of the Federation of Education of CCOO in Extremadura, during the 11th Congress where the need to defend public education «more than ever» has been emphasized, providing it with sufficient resources and protecting it from privatization threats.
At this meeting held in Mérida, 27 delegates representing over 1,500 members of this federation in Extremadura participated, covering sectors such as public, private, and charter education, disability care centers, universities, and school residences.
The composition of the new Executive Committee and the action plan for the next four years have also received unanimous support, aiming to promote public education that is free, equitable, inclusive, and of high quality, while advocating for the improvement of labor and salary conditions for professionals in the sector.
Rodríguez highlighted the federation’s current demand for salary standardization for teachers across different regions.
The new Secretary General expressed concern about the «precariousness» of professionals in sectors like disability care, complementary educational services, and early childhood education. Additionally, in the university sector, he warned about the arrival of four private universities, emphasizing the need to ensure they meet minimum quality standards.
Encarna Chacón, the General Secretary of CCOO in Extremadura, emphasized education as a fundamental right and a key tool for ensuring equal opportunities, advocating for adequate and equitable funding for the education system.
Milagros Escalera, the Organization Secretary of the Federation of Education, emphasized that education should be seen as an «investment» rather than an «expense,» while also warning about privatization processes taking place in various autonomous communities.
Recognition was given to the significant work of the former General Secretary, Lourdes Núñez, during the congress held at the Velada Hotel in Mérida under the slogan ‘Ending inequalities and gaining new rights.’
The 27 delegates were appointed by the affiliation of the Federation of Education in the regional assemblies held over the past few months.
The Congress is the highest deliberative and decision-making body of this federation, convened every four years to determine the general strategy, union activity, internal organization, debate and modify action plans and statutes of the union, and elect the individuals who will assume leadership roles: the Secretary General and the Executive Committee.
In addition to the new Executive Committee and Action Plan, delegates were also selected to attend higher-level congresses.
CCOO’s congress process continues with key upcoming dates: the 12th Congress of CCOO in Extremadura on May 21-22, the 14th Congress of the Federation of Education of CCOO on May 7-9, and the 13th Confederation Congress on June 19-21.
